Some of the Best Remedies for Psoriasis
I have suffered from psoriasis on my scalp, back, torso and legs for several years now, and although the symptoms go away sometimes, they always return. Unfortunately, there is no real cure for psoriasis at the moment, and I have had to come to terms with the fact that I might have to live with the condition to some extent for the rest of my life. However, I have done a lot of research into the condition over the years and have tried various types of natural cures to help manage the symptoms. Here are some of the remedies that I have found to be the most effective.
Psoriasis makes your skin dry out, so I try to keep my skin moisturised as much as possible. One of the best ways to do this is to take a long soak in the tub every day, using tepid water rather than hot water. However, I make sure that I do not use bath products that can dry out the skin and I moisturise my skin thoroughly using a heavy moisturiser after getting out the tub.
I have to be careful about the types of products I use on my skin, especially when it comes to shampoo and conditioner. Fortunately there are several different types of shampoo that have been specially created for psoriasis and they are usually marketed as anti-dandruff shampoo. These tend to help keep the psoriasis on my scalp under control, although I find that I have to change brands every month or so, otherwise the symptoms return.
As I have seen in myself and a friend who also suffer from psoriasis, stress tends to cause a breakout. Because I have a tough work schedule it is often impossible to avoid stress altogether. Therefore I have taken up certain types of techniques that help myself to fight stress and relax such as meditation and yoga. Going for a massage is sometimes a good way to relax as well as the oils that my masseuse uses feel great on my skin.
What we eat and drink has a significant effect on the way that we look and feel. Although I have found that managing my diet is the best way to manage my psoriasis symptoms. Through a process of trial and error I have found that certain types of food tend to trigger an outbreak of psoriasis when they are eaten in fairly large amounts. These foods include caffeine, fatty red meat and dairy products. Although I love some junk food like chips and crisps, when I go on a junk food binge I seem to have a breakout of psoriasis almost straight away, so I try to avoid these as much as possible.
When it comes to diet, I tend to go with the rule of everything in moderation these days. There are certain types of food that I love such as chips. Although I know that they are bad for both my general health and my psoriasis, I allow myself to indulge every once in a while, although they definitely are not part of my daily diet anymore.
I have also cut gluten out of my diet, as gluten has been shown to aggravate the symptoms of psoriasis. This means that I avoid shop bought bread, cakes and pastries, although on the plus side I now have the pleasure of making my own tasty bread and cakes using gluten free flour. Not only do these cakes and bread taste much better than those bought from a shop, they do not aggravate my psoriasis.
Of course, I have also made sure that I add plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to my diet, especially vegetables that have been shown to have healing properties for the skin. Sometimes it is difficult to pack in enough vitamins and minerals into your diet, especially when you lead a busy life. my solution to this was to buy a juicer and to make myself at least two glasses of pure fruit and vegetable juice every day.
